WHY WE BUILT THIS

A Practice Built for the People Who Were Told They Did Not Quite Fit

Most people arrive at therapy having already tried. They have explained themselves to providers who did not understand their culture, sat in offices where the lights were too bright and no one asked, or been handed a diagnosis that described a symptom and missed the person. Blu Alliance Counseling Center exists because that experience is so common, and because it does not have to be.

Where This Started

Dr. Amanda Alonzo founded Blu Alliance nine years ago, after years of watching capable, thoughtful people fall through the gaps in mental health care. Some were turned away because their insurance was the wrong kind. Some were told their concerns were cultural rather than clinical. Some were autistic or ADHD adults who had spent decades being treated for anxiety that was really exhaustion from masking.

She built the practice she wished had existed: one where a client does not have to translate themselves before the work can begin. As a Latina, autistic psychotherapist, veteran, and mother, she brought both clinical training and lived understanding to that decision. The name reflects it. An alliance is not one expert and one patient. It is two people working on the same side of the problem.

What Nine Years Taught Us

A practice reveals its values in its ordinary decisions, not its mission statement. Here is what ours look like.

We Hire Slowly

Every clinician at Blu Alliance is chosen deliberately, for clinical skill and for the way they treat people. Our team includes licensed marriage and family therapists, clinical social workers, and professional clinical counselors, many of whom bring lived experience alongside their training. A larger roster would be easier to build. A carefully chosen one serves clients better.

We Do Not Rush Healing

Trauma-informed care is not a phrase we added to a website. It shapes how sessions are paced, how history is asked about, and how much control the client keeps over what gets discussed and when. Progress that is forced tends not to last.

We Adapt the Room, Not the Person

Neurodiversity-affirming care means the environment flexes. Sensory needs, communication preferences, and processing differences are accommodations we plan for, not exceptions we make. Neurodivergent minds are not problems to be corrected.

Culturally Responsive Is Not a Checkbox

Our team reflects the San Gabriel Valley, and that matters in specific ways. It means a clinician who understands why a client has not told their family they are in therapy. It means recognizing when a symptom is being expressed in the language of the body because that is what the culture permits. It means Spanish-language sessions where they are needed, and the awareness that bilingual is not the same as bicultural.

We are not the right fit for everyone, and we will say so honestly. When a client needs something we do not offer, we help them find it.

Where We Are Now

Blu Alliance is a multi-site group practice serving the San Gabriel Valley from two Covina offices and one in La Verne, with telehealth available throughout California. We work with adults, couples, families, teens, and children, and we accept most major insurance plans.

The practice has grown considerably since its first year. What has not changed is the standard we hold: every person who walks through the door is met with compassion, expertise, and respect.
